  • Workshop 1: Taping for Upper Limb Injuries
  • Workshop 2: Treating the brain in neuropathic arm pain.

This workshop aims to improve participants' awareness of the developing array of novel techniques used to manage pain and improve function for people with neuropathic arm pain. Examples of such techniques include Graded Motor Imagery and Graded Exposure Invivo.

Presenter: Michael Deen (B.Occ Thy(Hons) M.Phil) is an occupational therapist at the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital Professor Tess Cramond Multidisciplinary Pain Centre. From 2004-2006 he was the Cramond Fellow in Occupational Therapy. He is currently the Queensland Councillor for the
Australian Pain Society.

  • Workshop 3: Give Us a Hand Towards Easier Living for those with Upper Limb Issues

This casual 60 minute interactive session will highlight both new and old assistive technology (AT) aimed towards reducing the problems associated with upper limb issues. Focusing on return to work, self-care and leisure activities; a discussion will guide the rationale behind helping an individual discover what AT may be of assistance to them, and the participants will be able to touch and feel the devices and equipment to gain a better understanding of the items out there to make life just that bit easier.

The Presenter: Kate Hunt
Kate is an Occupational Therapist at LifeTec Queensland. She holds a bachelor of Occupational Therapy with first-class honours from Latrobe University in Melbourne, and was awarded the University Faculty of Health Sciences prizes for her academic achievements and practical experience. Kate is passionate about the role of assistive technology in helping people to undertake daily living, work and leisure activities, with a particular interest in home/workplace modification, mobility, seating and positioning, and aids for daily living.

  • Workshop 4: Measuring the Immeasurable": Using Automated Facial Image Analysis (AFA) to recognise spontaneous facial behaviour to improve clinical assessment of symptom severity

Participants will be presented with background theoretical information on definition, classification and pathophysiology, examination, diagnosis and differential diagnosis and management and then some practical with the examination and management.

Presenter: Luen Pearce (B. Phty (Hons), M. Musculoskeletal Phty)
Luen currently works part-time as a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at Physioactive, a private practice in Ipswich and for the Orthopaedic and Specialized Spinal Physiotherapy Screening Clinics at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. Luen also works on a casual basis for the Physiotherapy
Department at The University of Queensland which involves Clinical Tutoring of Masters students undertaking their Masters of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. This role also incorporates assessment and examination of students. Luen has held the role of Professional Development Co-ordinator for Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia (MPA), Qld Branch and held numerous commitee positions previously for both the MPA and Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). She is currently studying to sit the Specialization examination process to become a Fellow of the College of Physiotherapy (APA).

Workshop 9
UL Anatomy Laboratory
Facilited by Dr Kevin Huang
Venue: The University of Queensland

Observe a hand surgeon demonstrating the anatomy and common surgical dissections of the upper limb at the University of Queensland's state-of-the-art anatomy laboratory. This is intended to be a close-up experience with the opportunity for discussion with Dr Huang and the university's upper limb anatomy lecturer.

Workshop 10
The Wrist Workshop: Assessment
Facilitated by Rosemary Prosser
Venue: Stamford Plaza Brisbane

The surface anatomy of the wrist will be reviewed, and comprehensive approach to the wrist assessment. This will be a hands-on workshop with participants practicing the manual techniques.

Advances in Wound Care

This is a hands-on workshop where participants will construct two casts under the expert guidance of one of Queensland Health's leading technicians. Casting for tone and CMMs will be discussed throughout the learning process.

Workshop 14
Extensor tendinosis - tackling it from a different direction, anatomy, treatment and supports
Facilitated by Helen Burfield, Physiotherapist, Post Grad Dip Upper limb and Hand Rehabilitation

This workshop aims to discuss many aspects of extensor tendinosis of the elbow looking at it as a whole arm issue as well as the local tissue changes.
Anatomy, biomechanics and pathophysiology of the problem will be discussed along with demonstrations of practical hands on treatments, exercises and advice for patients suffering from this disorder. I will discuss the research that we have done on our methods to show its effectiveness.
Taping and a brace that approaches this problem from a different perspective will be demonstrated and participants will be shown how to tape the elbow and make these braces.

Biography - Helen Burfield
Physiotherapist
Graduated from South Australian institute of Technology in 1985.
Worked at The Queen Elizabeth hospital for 3 years then a variety of private practices
Full member of AHTA since 1988.
Gained Post grad diploma in Upper limb and hand rehabilitation in 1995 through Curtin University in Perth.
Worked at The Upper Limb Rehabilitation Centre in Adelaide 1988 until 1995 with Sandy Williamson and Kathy Minchin.
Now a partner at Adelaide Sports Physiotherapy and have worked there 1995 until present.
Is the physio for a State League Netball team.
Has been state rep. for ATHA and is currently the treasurer.
Treats all upper limb injuries and disorders, sporting, orthopaedic and post op.
Special interest in elbow injuries and has done research on extensor tendinosis along with work partner Jim Mack.

Workshop 15
Using Exercise Analysis to Create Effective Exercise Programs for the Hand Therapy
Facilitated by Margareta Persson OTR, Uppsala University Hand Surgery Department, Sweden
Cost: $150.00

This workshop will discuss and analyse normal and pathological movement patterns of the hand. Participants will analyse the balance between the range of motion in the MCP- and IP- joints respectively, as well as see to which degree different positions of the IP-joints, the MCP-joints, the position of the wrist and forearm affects the potential active range of motion. Splints for exercise will be presented and some common hand exercise programs will be analysed.
