Rehabilitation Following Extensor Carpi Ulnaris Tendon Sheath Repair
Recovery from surgical repair of the ECU tendon sheath is a tedious process. The required and immediate result of the surgery is a taut wrist, one that does not tolerate passive movement to end range. Indeed, a degree of immobilisation is required to permit stabilisation of the repair. This requirement for stability impacts upon rehabilitation, however if the hand therapy protocols can be strictly monitored and tailored to the individual, excellent results can be achieved.
This presentation will include a review of the literature comparing surgical and conservative management. It shall examine the biomechanics of the injury and in particular, how sports such as tennis, golf and cricket can contribute to the initial subluxation. Case studies will be utilised to demonstrate rehabilitation protocols and realistic timeframes.
